Urine merupakan hasil filtrasi (penyaringan) darah. Dalam sehari ginjal bisa menyaring 1500-2000 ml darah. Urine dibentuk melalui 3 tahapan, yaitu: ·          Filtrasi Filtrasi atau penyaringan terjadi di glomerulus dan kapsula Bowman. Darah bertekanan tinggi yang membawa sisa-sisa metabolisme akan masuk ke glomerulus. Di dalam glomerulus zat-zat yang terlarut dalam darah akan disaring. Hanya zat yang bermolekul kecil seperti air, garam, amonia, urea dan glukosa yang dapat melewati saringan glomerulus, sedangkat zat bermolekul besar seperti protein dan sel-sel darah akan tertinggal. Penyaringan ini dipengaruhi oleh pengerutan dan pengembangan pembuluh arteriola yang menuju dan meninggalkan glomerulus. Cairan yang telah disaring, kemudian masuk ke kapsula Bowman. Di kapsula Bowman cairan tersebut disaring lagi di lapisan dalam. Filtrat yang terbentuk disebut filtrat-glomerulus atau urine primer. Filtrat ini ditampung di rongga kapsula Bowman dan akan dialirkan ke tubulus konto
